比如中國的古典四大名著,在西方便有公認(rèn)的翻譯:《西游記》是“Pilgrimage to the West”(直譯為“朝圣西方”),《紅樓夢》是“A Dream of Red Mansions”(“紅色莊園之夢”),《水滸傳》是“Outlaws of the Marsh”(“沼澤地里的亡命之徒”),《三國演義》是“The Romance of the Three Kingdoms”(“三個王國的浪漫故事”)。
一些電影的名字也翻譯得十分有趣,比如,《霸王別姬》被譯為“Farewell My Concubine(別了,我的小老婆)”,《東邪西毒》則被譯為“Ashes of Time(時間的灰燼)”。
中國的菜名和地名是非常難翻譯的。2012年3月,北京出臺了中國菜的官方譯名,為許多菜“正名”,比如,“餃子”從原來的dumpling變成了音譯“Jiaozi”。而一些老品牌也注冊了新的英文名字,比如,“狗不理”的英文名字最后定為“Go Believe”。
而外國名字的中文翻譯也頗有講究。以電影《變形金剛》為例,其中“威震天”的英文名字為“Megatron”,直譯為“超大功率電子盤封管”;而“擎天柱”的英文名字是“Optimus Prime”,譯者選取“擎天白玉柱,架海紫金梁”的意思,配給了這位汽車人的首領(lǐng)。
企業(yè)和品牌名稱的翻譯則更為講究,比如,“Mercedes-Benz”被譯為“梅塞德斯—奔馳”,“Head&Shoulders”(直譯為“頭和肩膀”)被譯為“海飛絲”,都被奉為業(yè)界翻譯經(jīng)典。
拍案叫絕的“錯譯”
北京西南郊的永定河上橫跨著一座盧溝橋,以其高超的建橋技術(shù)和精美的石獅雕刻獨具風(fēng)韻,堪稱古今一大奇觀。
盧溝橋被譯為“Marco Polo Bridge”,意為“馬可?波羅橋”。為什么始建于800多年前的中國古橋,會有一個不折不扣的洋名字呢?原來,13世紀(jì)著名的意大利旅行家和商人馬可?波羅曾游歷中國達(dá)17年之久,其間到訪不少古城,飽覽名勝古跡。他路過北京時,邂逅盧溝橋,大感驚嘆,遂記述于《馬可波羅游記》一書中。
“這條河上有一座十分美麗的石橋,在世界上恐怕無與倫比。此橋長300步,寬8步,即使10個騎馬的人在橋上并肩而行,也不會感覺狹窄不便……石柱上那些精巧的石獅,構(gòu)成了一幅美麗的圖畫!瘪R可?波羅寫道。
這是歐洲人撰寫的第一部詳盡描繪中國歷史、文化和藝術(shù)的游記,它被翻譯成多種文字后廣為流傳。書中被大加贊譽的盧溝橋,由此成為西方人心目中的“馬可?波羅橋”。
不得不說,像這樣既牽扯文化軼事,又容易讓西方人念出的譯名,對文化傳播可謂“加分”不少。這等事例雖不少,只是可遇而不可求。
比如,“長城”在英文中是“The Great Wall”,意為“了不起的墻”。這一譯名由來已久,出自誰手已不可考,但足可見譯者對長城這一意象的深刻領(lǐng)悟。雖稱“城”,其實卻是一堵厚實的墻;雖稱“長”,著意卻在綿延千萬里的雄偉。
又如“紫禁城”,其名借喻紫微星壇。因紫微垣居于中天,是天帝所居,故有“紫微正中”之說。然而“紫”字在英文中無此含義,若加注釋性定語,則譯名必定冗長。于是,譯者只取“禁”字的“皇家重地,閑雜人等不得入內(nèi)”之意,翻譯成“Forbidden City”,令人叫絕!

大年初一早上,我早早起床,把自己弄得衣著整齊。早飯過后,我給爺爺奶奶拜年,爺爺奶奶把早準(zhǔn)備好的紅包給了我,希望我身體健康。我拿著紅包好高興,我要把壓歲錢存起來,等到爺爺奶奶生日的時候再給爺爺奶奶買禮物。
接著我到外婆家去拜年了,我見到了六只新出生的小狗,它們有的長了一身烏黑的毛,有的長了一身棕色的毛,好可愛!我還用年夜飯剩下的骨頭給它們吃。當(dāng)我離開外婆家的時候,它們一直目送我們上車,我還真有點舍不得離開它們。
