  My Mother

when i sat at the desk, trying to write the essay, i found it hard to set pen to paper. staring at the topic i deliberately chose for myself my mother, i felt the memory of 20 years with my mother suddenly turned into a haze, blurring my eyes to discern the past, with nothing towering, nothing flaring, nothing impressive or special enough as a landmark. the haze gradually cleared away, revealing the image of an amicable woman. i recalled a line from the famous movie sleepless in seattle. the radio column hostess asked sam, whats so special about your wife? he answered, thats millions of small things. right, trivial and commonplace, like obscure beans, yet woven into the most spectacular necklace by the power of love. my mother is ordinary, but in my eyes she is special.

my mother gave birth to me with eceptionally difficult labor. father received an emergency notice and was faced with a choice between the adult and the infant. of course, the adult. so my coming into this world was an unepected fortune at the price of mothers painful insistence. thus my 20 years began like this my mother eerted every effort to give me love, but i returned her with a deep scar that was to stay with her all through my growth.

my mother is a senior high school english teacher. under standably, she wanted her daughter to pick up english early to give her an edge to later study, which i did not understand at the age of eight. i was so obsessed with fun and games that i hated to stay peacefully with all those strange phonetic symbols and odd words. i wondered what pleasure mother seemed to have found in teaching me a,b, c. wasnt teaching at school tire some enough for her? i went on strike, refusing to spell a single word no matter how tender or severe mother tried to be with me. for the first time in my life, mother beat me, imprinting on my mind. the physical pain was gone long, long ago. but i have finally come to understand how it pained my mother to beat me for my obstinacy and disobedience, and i ache at her pain.

mother never gave up evoking in me an interest in knowledge. she placed the most emphasis on my education and took the most pleasure in my gradual formation of self-discipline in preparing myself for future development. thanks to her effort and influence, i have been doing well, not only in english, but also in my positive attitudes and conviction towards life.

now i am so grateful to my mother for everything she has taught me, but at that time it was far beyond my comprehension. as a little girl, i thought of my mother as meticulous and my father as a best playmate. i still remember i wrote in my elementary school a composition dedicated to my father about how he cared for me. naturally mother felt she was ignored, so i wrote another one for mother, intending to tell her she was so good a teacher that she sometimes had only students on mind and neglected her daughter. unepectedly, mother was gloomed and her eyes went wet. i am so sorry now for that affected composition. i am mothers daughter, and i am mothers student. i could never be neglected by mother, because i am the forever scar on her body, the forever pain on her mind, yet the forever bliss in her life.

i did not write much in the past about mothers love for me. today, this essay is for her, and for her only. i wish to let her know my regret and gratitude. i wish she could hear, i love you, mother.

It is well known that practice makes perfect. whatever is worth doing at all is wordl doing well. to do well is to try, try, and try again. that is how i understand practice makes perfect.

Take for eample the study of english. in the beginning, it seemed hard to me to pronounce each word correctly and to memorize the grammar rules, sentence structures, the whole tets. by reading the tets over and over, listening to the tape again and again, and writing and speaking more and more, i have overcome the difficulties and become more skillful in mastering the language. nothing is impossihle if you set your mind on it.

Another case in point is my learning to play erhu. the first time i played the musical instrument, it was like sawing wood. the sound annoyed everyone in the house including myself, but i kept at it against the complaints of my family. at last, i made it. now i can make pleasant music on my erhu.

Eperience tells me practice makes perfect.

After the baptism of the storm, the small trees can be stronger and grow stronger. Each person’s life is different, because each person‘s character, birth, ability, experience and other internal or external factors are different, resulting in different lives of different people. But one thing is the same: a successful life needs a process full of frustrations, a clear mind, and, most importantly, a heart that never fears setbacks, never gives up, never fails.

No one can succeed at will, and no one can always be smooth sailing. Suppose that a person’s life is surprisingly smooth, without so-called setbacks, failures and waves, is his life a success? The answer is no, it‘s just a flower growing in a greenhouse, which can’t stand any wind and rain. What‘s more, this situation is impossible. Therefore, life needs setbacks, just as eagles want to spread their wings and fly, they must first go through cruel training when they are young, otherwise they can only be separated from the blue sky.

Maybe someone will say, “if you need setbacks in life, how about a car accident? Is the setback big enough? It’s nothing to do. I‘m full of food. My brain is kicked by an ass and clipped by a crack in the door.” Of course, that’s not the case. The need for setbacks does not mean that we have to find trouble for ourselves. There are some things that we can avoid, but we should try our best to avoid.

The key is, when setbacks come and are already inevitable, how should we deal with them? There are three options: retreat, advance or stay where we are?Which one should we choose? First, we can analyze these three options. It can be found that each of the three choices has two different meanings. Retreat can be to be afraid of difficulties or to be ready to go; to move forward can be to blunder or to be courageous; to stay in place can be to wait for death or to respond to changes with constancy. Maybe someone is dizzy. Which one should be chosen?

In fact, it doesn‘t matter which one you choose. It’s your attitude that determines everything! If in the face of setbacks, you are afraid, you are confused, you dare not face it, you give up, which one is different? If you face it bravely, don‘t say fear, don’t say abandon, don‘t say defeat, then congratulations, no matter what the result is, you are lucky.

“Setbacks are like a stone, a stumbling block for the weak, a stepping stone for the strong, a stepping stone for you to stand higher,” Balzac said The deeds of countless great people and celebrities prove this to us. Beethoven loved music since he was a child. However, his life was full of suffering. The most unfortunate thing was that at the age of 28, he was deaf in both ears. Can you imagine how hard this hit a person who regarded music as everything in his life?

It was no less than death.People around him advised him to give up his music career because it was impossible for him. To everyone’s surprise, Beethoven persevered tenaciously, integrated his soul into the music, and created a large number of classic songs, bringing people joy. Beethoven proved to us his attitude to setbacks, as he said, “I must control my fate.”. Think about it. If it wasn‘t frustration, or the indomitable attitude of facing the team, would there be Beethoven in our eyes today?

Edison has experienced numerous failures and invented the electric l& Zhang Haidi, who has a strong body, is called the “Paul” of the present age; Hua Luogeng, who has published many important mathematical scientific research results under various obstacles, is called the “father of Chinese mathematics”. There are many similar examples. These pioneers of the times set an example for us. What made them? It’s frustration, suffering, and a tenacious heart of struggle.

“The sword is sharpened and the plum blossom fragrance comes from the bitter cold.” “If you don‘t experience the wind and rain, you can’t see the rainbow.” It‘s hard to produce fresh, fragrant, cold and proud flowers in the greenhouse. Only after suffering can people succeed. “ Frustration is a kind of test: it picks out a group of hearts, sets aside the pure and strong ones, makes them more pure and strong; but it makes the rest of the hearts accelerate to fall, or cut off their leaping power.

Life needs setbacks. A successful life needs more setbacks.

Many factors may make a contribution toone’s success, such as diligence, honesty, patience, responsibility and so on.Besides, as far as I am concerned, self-confidence is also an important and indispensable factor to contribute to one’s success.

The following reasons can account for my above opinion. First,self-confidence is a kind of self-affirmation for our ability. A successful manis bound to believe in himself first so that he has courage and power to make some achievements. On the contrary, if he has great ability but does not believe himself enough, he will not be able to play his ability and power or at least can’t play fully. Second, self-confidence is a great motivation for us to keep trying and keep going. A self-confident man will try his best to achieveh is goal again and again rather than say “no” or give up when he is confronted with hardship. In addition, a self-confident but not arrogant man usually brings some positive influence to the whole situation in a team. People around the man will be affected by his confidence and become confident for their teamwork.

In summary, self-confidence is a significant character and quality in one’s success. Therefore, we should try to develop our confidence but not arrogance to some extent so that we can succeed in our study or work.

death of etremism results from death of social care to move or not to move, a dilemma that had been plaguing weng biao for two months was finally resolved in a burning way. with his two-room shack knocked down by the government's bulldozer, weng made a desperate attempt of pouring a can of gasoline on himself and sparking a fire.he was dead, which raised the tension between the government and the inhabitants to move greater than ever. so who is to blame? no specific culprit but the society itself. it is the ill social response to those in need that led to the behavior of etremism and the ensuing un

weng's story typifies the buddyship between social instability and etreme behavior. the bulldozer not only pulled down the family's shelter but their last hope of getting the justice done as well. without home, without fear. it is the boldness from despair that ignited the wanton breach of social rule, which basically comes in the form of etreme behavior like self-burning. turmoil, the state of rulelessness, thus started.

but where's the society? has it ever done something to stop the tragedy? no! all we can see is silence till the burning day.and the worse is yet to come. in the case of zhang inpin, a depressed boy who jumped out of the building to death because of wowing from the spectators.society simply facilitates the sad end by inducing the victim to the etreme.

throw the cards of neglect and instigation into the trash bo, and we get the trump. that is the care for others. if weng biao had been given a chance to pour his worry to somebody and that person offered to lend a hand, the fire could probably have been avoided even though the demolition went on. why? because a sense of being cared about is gained. weng, formerly fought by himself, now found something to rely on. similarly, if the society approaches the etremist-to-be, listens to his suffering and does some supportive things (comforting words, donation.., an ything will do), the horrible decision, once as stiff as a poker, will mostly be given up.

yet, the problem is not over. what if the etreme behavior really happens? which role should the society play?

first, the dignity of the victim himself deserves full respect.blaming the victim for his stupidity only irritates the kind of people sharing the same suffering.

second, the cause of the event should be publicized if it has anything to do with most people's interest. otherwise, rumors will erode people's trust in the society while turmoil can well be stirred up by the widespread aniety.

last, the problem that brings about the tragedy is supposed to get a solution. it can be the establishment and modification of laws, or simply more attention to the group of people in need.

it counts how we do to curb the etreme behavior for the sake of social stability. the best policy, as i said before, is to care for the people in trouble, make the event known to the public if necessary and heal the defect hidden behind.

it was a sunny balmy afternoon at the end of a leisurely summer. i was driving on a winding country road with a lady friend. little did i know that i was to have a close call that would have almost ruined the rest of my life.

earlier that day, a friend called me to tell me that our mutual friend rosy was arriving back from taiwan after the summer holidays. since there was no airport in the immediate vicinity of the university, she would need a ride to come back on campus.

being mildly interested in that girl, i jumped at the chance to play hero. the trip was not particular long or arduous. i was to pick her up from a friend’s home that was a mere 80 miles from campus—a piece of cake, i said to myself.

everything went well. the country road was almost deserted. visibility was good and i was not driving very fast. the conversation was lively but not distracting.

about half an hour into the drive, i rounded a corner and noticed two small children, aged around 10, waiting to cross the road after getting off their school bus. my mind was not particularly focused on them because i thought they would not cross the road when a truck was coming through on their side. the two kids looked to their left, watching the truck intensely. as soon as the truck passed, and without a thought, they started to dash across the road. i was petrified, to say the least. my heart almost leaped out of my throat. time seemed to have come to a standstill. it was like a nightmare coming into reality. i felt i was in the slow motion crash scene of a movie. i did not even have the time to brake or steer clear.

by providence smiled on me that day. the two kids missed my car by less than an inch. imagine what would have happened if i had hit them? they would have been killed instantly. i would have been charged with manslaughter and thrown into jail. my career would be over before it even got started. the kind of inhumane treatment i would receive from fellow inmate, i could only guess but hate to imagine. i will never be a whole person again even if i were to be released early for good behavior. my life would be over. even if i had a good lawyer that could have gotten me off, i would have carried that guilt in my mind for the rest of my life.

even today, thirty-si years later, the memory of that day is still fresh on my mind. i have my lucky star to thank for having both parties gotten off unscathed.

private cars have become an important aspect of people’s life in many parts of our country, especially in large cities such as beijing, shanghai and guangzhou. while they bring much convenience to people, they are also widely criticized.

there are some arguments for owning private cars. in the first place, cars allow people to move around freely, which greatly improves our living standard. we can easily drive cars for sightseeing on weekends. in the second place, cars are a comfortable way to travel, especially in bad weather. last but not least, the car industry can boost economy by creating many job opportunities in production of steel, rubber, glass and so on.

however, there are also many good arguments against cars. first of all, they pollute the environment by emitting harmful gases and giving out loud noises. in addition, cars cause a large number of traffic accidents, which bring great misery to the victims’ families.

as far as i am concerned, we should limit the number of private cars by providing better mass transportation and better service for the people. everyone should sacrifice his or her own interest for the common good of the society.

one of the greatest socialists said that the status of women in a society is a pretty reliable inde of a civilized society. if it is true, then the present status of women (which seems equal with mens though in fact womens status are much lower than mens in many fields), in my point of view, should make us ponder about whether our society is civilized at all.

traditional ideology is so deeply rooted in peoples minds that it is rather hard to be uprooted. twenty or thirty years ago,it was believed that a woman must either get married young or risk becoming a spinster. those who did not get married were thought to be inferior and abnormal. fortunately, todays women have numerous options open to them besides early marriage. actually, a single woman is no longer looked down upon by societ—in civilized region, to say the least. however, in those backward areas, things dont go as we epect. i was a larmingly shocked by last winter vacations eperience. i went to huizhou, a small town net to mountain huang, with my friends. i still remember the array of memorial archways inside the town. a local told us that they were all in memory of those so called virtuous women, whose husbands died early or left the town, never coming back and they stayed unmarried for the rest of their lives. in fact, i was shocked at the maintenance of these meaningless gateways, which serves as a symbol of despise on women. how can the locals regard them as glorious women?

another important factor that hampers the development of womens status is womens counterpart men. mens resistance to womens equality is partly caused by their awareness that what the male does is no longer indispensable and women may be superior in some fields. actually, they have proved to be brilliant in the fierce competitions time and again. moreover, with the rapid development of technology, few tasks involve much physical strength. therefore, women can do more work than men sometimes.

as a matter of fact, the society itself also lays a heavy burden and unequal standards on women. although remarkable progress has been made in achieving better social status and sharing more equal rights for women in the past decades, their roles in their families remain basically unchanged. the double burden of working inside and outside home renders them no possibility to make full use of their talents and hinders them from taking the leadership. we should admit that women are favorable for occupations such as services, which are paid less than male jobs and have less opportunity to be promoted to top management positions. women often drop out at critical points in their careers for the sake of their families and children. the decade from twenty five to thirty five has proved to be vital in achieving success or securing a promising post, which is also the years when women are likely to have children. thus, they are left far behind men in the competitions for fame and power.

in modern society, we do see women powers, such as mad am thatcher, hillary clinton, and wu yi, the vice premier of china who played an important role in these critical days against sars. but why have they drawn peoples attention? just because they are women and female leaders are too rare to be seen.

taking into account all the relevant factors, we may safely conclude that we wont make progress in the achievement of womens status and their equal opportunities if peoples traditional ideas, mens attitude, societys burden remain unchanged. the picture isnt quite rosy. equality with men continues to be the goal of modern civilized society.

Science and technology is a double-edged sword, and its rapid development has both advantages and disadvantages: although it makes us more convenient and faster, we can do a lot of things without leaving home. But it also makes our earth scarred, and the development of science and technology is based on the resources of the earth!

Although the slogan in Shanghai, World Expo is "Better City, better life", many people think the city makes life worse! In cities like Shanghai, the air pollution index is all over the table. Nanjing is also shrouded in fog and haze every day, these are car exhaust and factory black gas. Although the country is now talking about air modification plans, it is only a matter of fact, and there is not much practical action. If we want to radically transform the air, we must strengthen the management of the government and, two, our conscious actions.

Imagine, if our only home is a tree lined, picturesque, cloudless sky, the world, what human beings have created Noah's ark, worried about what the end of the world?!
