The fifth day of the fifth lunar month is a traditional Chinese festival dedicated to the great patriotic poet Qu Yuan for his devotion to his native state.
Qu Yuan lived in the state of Chu during the Warring States period (475~221 B.C.). Chu was in condtant danger of being invaded by the state of Qin, the strongest among the seven states then existing in central china. As one of the dukes, Qu Yuan advocated that Chu should join forces with the neighboring state of Qi to fight against Qins troops. However, his patriotism and dedication were betrayed by capitulators who slandered him. The king of Chu believed them and sent Qu Yuan into exile. He wrote many immortal masterpieces exposing the corrupt and incompetent feudal regime. In his autobiographic works he expresses his political position and his ambition of rejuvenating his state. When Qu Yuan heard that Qin troops had occupied the Chu capital, he threw himself into the Miluo River in despair on the fifth day the fifth lunar month.
Local people honor the memory of Qu Yuan on this day by holding dragon-boat races. It is said that the boat races were regarded as a symbol of the peoples attempt to rescue Qu Yuan. For a long time now they have been a popular sport. China has a long history of making big wooden boats sport. The prow is a carved dragons head, and the body id made in a dragon-like shape or following the design of fish, birds or shrimp. It is painted red, yellow, black or white according to the taste of the oarsmen. Different size boats hold different numbers of oarsmen, seated in pairs. Boat races are held in rivers going either up or downstream or from bank to bank, following the strict rules and regulations set by the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission. Winners are awarded trophies. Every year the “Qu Yuan Cup” is held in China. The boat race is also very popular in Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia.
It is a tradition to eat zongzi, pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, with different fillings added for interest. According to one popular story, such dumplings were thrown into the river as food for the fish and shrimp to keep them from eating QuYuans body. These dumplings now are boiled and eaten on the holiday. Suzhou in Jiangsu province and Ningbo and Jiaxin in Zhejiang province are known for their zongzi with date and sweet bean paste, ham, or bacon filling. Beijing is famous for date and preserved fruit fillings. They are made in various shape, three-or four-cornered, or in the shape of a pillow, ax, ox horn and pagoda. The largest ones may weigh half a kilogram. For more than 2,000 years, people not only in China but also in Southeast Asia, Japan and Vietnam have maintained the tradition of eating zongzi on the Dragon Boat Festival.
Coming in the lull between spring plowing and summer weeding, the festival is celebrated in a variety of ways. It has overtones of spring purification, and in the south it is the occasion for a good house cleaning to protect against various diseases that may come with the hot weather.
On this day it is also customary to take a drink of wine containing realgar, rub the wine on childrens forehead, and sprinkle it on beds and mosquito nets to keep away insects.

The exact origins of Duan Wu are unclear, but one traditional
view holds that the festival memorializes the Chinese poet Qu Yuan (c. 340 BC-278 BC) of the Warring States Period. He committed suicide by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the
corruption of the Chu government. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fish so they would not eat Qus body. They also sat on long, narrow paddle boats called dragon boats, and tried to scare the fish away by the sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking carved dragon head on the boats prow(船頭).
In the early years of the Chinese Republic, Duan Wu was also celebrated as "PoetsDay,"due to Qu Yuans status as Chinas first poet of personal renown(名聲名望).
Today, people eat bamboo-wrapped steamed glutinous(粘的) rice dumplings called zongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fish) and race dragon boats in memory of Qus dramatic death.

When I was young, I was very excited about the arrival of the Dragon Boat Festival because I admired Qu Yuans excellent spiritual qualities. Therefore, he was very famous in China. In ancient times, emperors used the Dragon Boat Festival as a holiday to commemorate him, which made me see that ancient emperors still valued wise officials. I like the Dragon Boat Festival not only because I can learn a lot of knowledge and learn more about history.
Every Dragon Boat Festival, my mother would spend an hour telling me a story about the Dragon Boat Festival. Although I heard this story every year, I never got tired of it. Instead, I had more daydreams about Qu Yuans life in that era. When my mother was young, she would not make Zongzi, but I was particularly gluttonous and loved Zongzi, so she had to buy it for herself. In order to save money, my mother learned to make Zongzi, just to meet my requirements for eating Zongzi on the Dragon Boat Festival.
In addition, when the Dragon Boat Festival is coming, people are busy to make trouble for them. Sometimes I will be fascinated by what Zongzi stuffing they are making. If I am a glutton who likes Zongzi, I will stay at his house until I have a bite to eat. Every time I eat Zongzi, I think of the story of Qu Yuan that my mother told me. Qu Yuan is a patriotic warrior who loves his country, a hero of the people, and even more my idol. He encountered many setbacks when he lived in his age, but he is so strong that I particularly admire him. Qu Yuan is also my idol, so I will eat a lot of Zongzi on the Dragon Boat Festival to commemorate him.
I still remember that I would take a bath on the Dragon Boat Festival. It was a special bath. The water was soaked with medicinal herbs. My mother asked me to take such a bath every year, but I was reluctant to do so. Unless I ate Zongzi while taking a bath, my mother could not help me, so she promised me to take a bath like this. I will never forget the childhood memories of eating Zongzi while taking a bath. I accidentally lost Zongzi in the bath water without being steady. I cried for a long time because of that!
In my Dragon Boat Festival, I must eat Zongzi. Anyway, I have to do something for Qu Yuan. After all, my parents and teachers taught me not to waste food, so I cant throw Zongzi into the sea like those who remember Qu Yuan in ancient times, but I can throw Zongzi into my stomach, which is a memorial to Qu Yuan! Eat Zongzi on Dragon Boat Festival, for my idol.

Today is the Dragon Boat Festival on the fifth day of May.
I want to eat zongzi. Early in the morning, my mother bought glutinous rice, Zongye, jujube and other materials for zongzi from the market to prepare zongzi. Speaking of this zongzi, it has a great origin. During the Warring States period, the great poet Qu Yuan threw himself into the river. The villagers nearby were afraid that the Jiaolong in the river would eat Qu Yuan, so they wanted to throw some food to the Jiaolong. What to vote for! Throw some rice handlebars, but the rice will disperse in the water. A villager thought of an idea. Wrap the rice grains with lotus leaves and tie them with ropes, and the rice will not disperse. Everyone followed suit, and zongzi was born. Every year, the fifth day of the first month is also known as the Dragon Boat Festival. Now, people eat Zongzi on the Dragon Boat Festival in memory of Qu Yuan. When the ingredients are ready, they begin to make zongzi. First, take out two Zong leaves and fold them crosswise. Scoop up some glutinous rice leaves and put them on the glutinous rice leaves with a spoon. This step is the most important part of making zongzi. If you dont wrap it well, zongzi wont work. Naturally, I cant wrap it. I just fold it randomly and tie it with a rope. A zongzi is finished. Soon, the dumplings were steamed. When I opened the lid of the pot, I saw the dumplings I made. Either the rice is too little and collapses, or the rice grains are drilled out of the gap of Zongye. Although the appearance is not good, it is at least the crystallization of my labor. I still tasted it. Glutinous rice is full of the fragrance of zongzi leaves. It is soft and glutinous without sticky teeth. Jujube is also sweet and delicious. On the Dragon Boat Festival, there are not only zongzi, but also dragon boats, Wormwood Leaves and realgar wine. When rowing a dragon boat, it can be said that it is very lively. Gongs and drums make the sky noisy, which makes the program more lively. Dragon Boat Festival, beautiful Dragon Boat Festival, lively Dragon Boat Festival, happy Dragon Boat Festival!
