This bar chart shows us the distribution of awarded degrees among five different fields of study in 20xx.

We can see that the distribution of bachelor's degrees in the fields of social science, education, natural sciences, humanities, business, and accounting is, more or less, even. However, when it comes to Masters and Doctorates, a very large proportion goes to the field of education and natural sciences respectively. What is worse, the humanities have the smaller or smallest number of graduates. Take the Masters for example, humanities has only ten percent of the total number of degrees, which is the smallest portion.

Why is there such an uneven distribution of degrees when it comes to Masters or Doctorates. In other words, why do more students choose education for their Master's degree and the natural sciences for their Doctorate's degrees? The answer, I think, lies in the fact that it is easier to find jobs after graduation if they pursue these two degrees. A Master in education, for instance, may find it easier to find a teaching post, possibly, in a college or, certainly, in a high school. Astudent with a Doctorate degree in the natural sciences may find it easier to hold a position either in a research institute, a college, or a large company

Born in 1935, Mr. Smith spent his childhood in a mining village in a state. When he was a child, he hated school but had a talent for writing and he wrote his first poems. After his leaving school, he did his first job in a village shop for six years. During this period, he wrote a large number of poems in accordance with his own experiences and mental activities. Later, he left for S city in 1957 and published poems and his first novel. Delightfully, his works were popular when they published and he became a famous writer at once. However, he found that his life was meaningless though he led a luxurious life and started becoming depressed. Consequently, he first committed suicide unsuccessfully in 1960.

Later, Mr. Smith got married when he was 30, but his family life was not so happy because the couple did not have a common goal in marriage. Thus, he divorced his wife quickly and moved to another state to start a new life. But his works lost earlier popularity as time elapsed. Hence, he had to find another way to make a living. When he was fighting for his new life at the age of 32, Cupid fired another arrow at him—he fell in love with a girl at first sight. He ran after her fanatically. At last, they had a love child and moved back to his home state in 1972.

However, there is a crook in the lot of every one. With the growth of his son, Mr. Smith found that his life was so empty and boring in that he could not write any poems any longer, let alone published them. As the result, he committed suicide in 1975, at the age of 40.

Charity brings the society power, arouses people’s enthusiasm for life, and help others to overcome difficulties. However, after several scandals, it has become a trend for the public to criticize and doubt charity organizations or individuals. A case in point is China Red Cross, whose fame was spoiled by Guo Meimei.

It is evident that the causes of this phenomenon are diverse. In the first place, the disordered charity management is the root cause of criticism. Why? Charity organizations in mounting/ large numbers have not come to realize the problems in their management, budget and raising money. In the second place, the lack of public’s trust constitutes another major cause. Based on a survey on the Internet, because of some negative cases, a majority of people admit that they are unwilling to donate or help others through charitable activities or organizations.

As a college student, I am firmly convinced that it is exceedingly necessary for the public to be involved in charity. However, we should advocate and encourage organizations to reform charitable activities.

I have always been a voracious reader, but the pity is that I used to be indiscriminate in my reading habit. I would read and book which I could lay my hand on or any book the binding or the blurb of which caught my fancy at the moment. But when I grew up I found that books have to be useful or they would be much more harmful that a bad habit, and also that life is too short for us to waste it reading inferior or useless books. To read choice books can save time and we would thus be able to read more of them. The question of choosing good and suitable books, however, was once my greatest coming and it came in the form of a book, the Chinese translation of a book by the famous English writer W.S Maugham in which he introduces his readers to the best of world literature. I got the book by chance. I took part in a simulated entrance examination and won the ninth prize, the book I have just mentioned. I was delighted that Maugham, shows not only the content of each of the major works in his mind but also the way to read it. Thanks to this book I have come to know what is really meant by the literary spirit and what are the ingredients of great books. I would call it the most influential book in my life and would like to recommend it to all those lovers of literature.

  The Importance of Selfducation

Selfducation brings success. Though we students have teachers to help us, still we should pay more attention to selftudy. Here are some suggestions.

First, read outside our class. Every new book one reads will benefit him in one way or another. The more we read, the more we are benefited. As life is short and knowledge is infinite, we should try to read as many books as we can.

Second, improve our memory and reasoning powers. If we read more and more, we can make our memory and reasoning powers improve to some degree. Moreover, we shall be able to write more clearly and correctly.

Third, develop our character. When we have formed the habit of reading, we can put into practice what they have taught and build up a good character.

In a word, if we want to educate ourselves, the most important thing for us to do is to read not only our textbooks, but also any other books that are within our reach.
